Should I Believe LASIK Myths?
LASIK can be a complicated subject, which makes it easy for rumors to spread. There is no shortage of LASIK myths out there but there are some that stand out more than others.
Keep reading to find out if LASIK myths hold any merit!
First Myth: LASIK is Dangerous
As with any surgery, LASIK does carry some inherent risk. But when stacked up against other surgeries, LASIK is not considered “dangerous”.
The fact of the matter is, LASIK has an unbelievable success rate. Over 96% of patients achieve their desired results. Many of them reach visual acuity that surpasses their expectations.
As long as you follow all pre and post-LASIK instructions, there is a very low chance of complications.
Second Myth: LASIK is Painful
Having surgeons point lasers in your eyes sounds like it would hurt. It would, were it not for the powerful numbing agent used on your eyes during the surgery.
These eye drops make it so the only thing you may feel is some uncomfortable pressure for a few seconds. These drops wear off after about an hour, after which you may experience some slight pain for a few days.
But you don’t need to worry about an excruciating recovery. LASIK is actually very easy to recover from!
Third Myth: Recovery from LASIK is Difficult
LASIK does have a recovery period of about three months. Depending on the patient and the severity of the changes made, it could take up to six months.
You are not going to have to wait until the three months are up before you can leave your bed. You will be able to resume most of your normal routine within a couple of weeks, if not a matter of days.
You will still need to be careful with your eyes as they recover. For the most part, it means not rubbing them and avoiding contact sports.
You should also avoid swimming in any bodies of water for about a month. As far as recoveries from surgical procedures go, LASIK is an easy one!
Fourth Myth: Anyone Can Get LASIK
While it would be great if anyone could get LASIK, it’s not right for everyone. Part of the reason it has such an amazing success rate is that only good candidates can get it.
If you’re not a candidate, you can’t get LASIK. There are other procedures like LASIK you can get, such as PRK in this case.
The only way to know for sure if you’re a good LASIK candidate is to have a LASIK consultation. Some of the factors taken into consideration include age, health, and eye conditions.
A good LASIK candidate will have stable vision that hasn’t changed for at least a year, and be at least 18 years old. There are many other factors, but these are some of the bigger ones.
