For many people who are nearsighted, reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses is a desire that can greatly improve their quality of life. At Frantz EyeCare, we are proud to offer the new EVO ICL to enhance vision in patients who qualify.

What is the EVO ICL?

An implantable collamer lens, or ICL, is an artificial lens implanted into the eye to improve blurry or impaired vision caused by refractive errors. The EVO ICL corrects two types of refractive errors: nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The purpose of this vision-improving procedure is to reduce dependence on contact lenses and glasses. While the lens is intended to be permanent, patients can be reassured that their physician can remove the EVO ICL if needed, and reverse the outcome of the procedure.

Benefits of the EVO ICL

There are many different types of ICLs available. For patients who qualify, the EVO ICL offers some very unique benefits.

Unlike other permanent vision correction procedures, the EVO ICL procedure does not require any removal or alteration of tissue, which reduces the potential for scar tissue to develop. The lens is also comprised of biocompatible materials, which means that it is very adaptable with living tissue.

Here are some additional distinct advantages of choosing the EVO ICL:

Unlike other ICLs, the EVO ICL does not require an iridotomy prior to the procedure, which is a significant benefit. An iridotomy is a laser procedure that is often required before the insertion of ICLs to reduce the likelihood of eye pressure issues after the procedure.

The EVO ICL is specifically designed to reduce the chance of elevated eye pressure levels, so you can avoid having to visit the office for an additional procedure before ICL surgery. Overall, the most significant benefit to choosing the EVO ICL is the reduction and potential elimination of the reliance on visual aids.

How Do I Know if I am a Good Candidate for the EVO ICL?

The only way to determine if you would be a good candidate for the EVO ICL is to visit your eye doctor at Frantz EyeCare in Southwest Florida, for an evaluation. During this evaluation, your eye doctor will perform a thorough examination of your eyes.

This examination will include going over your medical history, taking measurements of your eyes, and looking at your eyes under a microscope called a slit-lamp. Once your eye doctor has done a thorough evaluation, they will be able to determine if the EVO ICL is right for you.

The best candidate for the EVO ICL is someone who is between the ages of twenty-one and forty-five. Your eye doctor will likely also require that you have had a stable glasses prescription for a year prior.

If you are nearsighted and are interested in permanent vision correction, visit your eye doctor for an evaluation to see if the EVO ICL may be a good fit for you.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for the EVO ICL?

Your eye doctor is the only person who can determine whether or not you may be a good candidate for the EVO ICL.

Your eye doctor will likely not qualify you as a candidate for the EVO ICL if you are pregnant or nursing. Hormone fluctuations during this period can affect vision, making it challenging for a doctor to take accurate measurements for the vision correction procedure.

Sometimes, your eye doctor may not qualify you for candidacy if you have certain eye conditions, such as glaucoma. The surgical team at Frantz EyeCare will make every effort to ensure the safety of patients by only qualifying individuals for surgery who meet the EVO ICL clearance requirements.

What is Recovery Like after the EVO ICL Procedure?

In addition to the benefit of a quick procedure, recovery after the EVO ICL procedure is often rapid, with most people returning to many of their everyday activities within days of the procedure.

Your eye doctor will provide you with a list of instructions to follow during recovery. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure that you can avoid any complications.

It is possible that your eye doctor may require you to use prescription eye drops to aid in recovery. If your eye doctor prescribes medication(s), it is essential that you take the medicine as prescribed to ensure that your eyes heal properly.

Your eye doctor at Frantz EyeCare will also likely ask you to visit the office the day after and periodically after the procedure. During these visits, your eye doctor will test your vision and examine your eyes to make sure that they are healing well and that your vision has improved.

What Happens During the EVO ICL Procedure?

The procedure typically takes less than thirty minutes to complete.

One of the best things about the EVO ICL is that it is a relatively quick procedure. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning you have the procedure and then get to go home the same day.

First, your eye doctor will numb the surface of your eyes with anesthetic drops. Next, they will create a small opening in your cornea, which is the transparent front surface of your eye.

Through this small opening, your eye doctor will insert the EVO ICL. Next, they will position it in place in front of your natural lens and behind your iris.

Once in place, the procedure is complete. Most people notice an improvement in their vision right after the procedure, although your eyes may need to heal before experiencing the full vision potential.
