4 Factors to Consider in Your LASIK Surgeon Search

Young woman thinking about LASIK in Fort Myers

Once you’ve decided to pursue LASIK eye surgery, it’s important to find the right surgeon to perform the procedure. While there are countless qualified surgeons, the trick is making sure you find the right surgeon for you; the one who makes you feel comfortable and whom you trust completely to help you reach your vision goals.

But how do you find the right LASIK surgeon for you? Here are 4 tips to help you narrow down the search!

1. Experience

Whoever you choose, your LASIK surgeon should have plenty of experience with the procedure. It isn’t uncommon for an experienced surgeon to have upwards of 50,000 LASIK surgeries under their belt. Not sure how many surgeries a surgeon has performed? Ask!

2. More than Just Numbers

Experience matters but it’s certainly not the only criteria when it comes to finding the best LASIK surgeon for you. You also want your surgeon to meet industry standards for approving LASIK candidates and screening out those who don’t fit requirements. In general, your surgeon should be screening out between 15 and 25 percent, as LASIK is not appropriate for everyone. Pay attention to the warning bells if they happen to screen out far less than the average and continue your search for a responsible LASIK surgeon. Issues like thin corneas, certain health conditions, age, and more could indicate that LASIK may not be the right decision for you.

3. No Pressure

This isn’t an automotive dealer and a search for the best deal on your dream car, by any means. This is a surgical procedure, and you have to feel comfortable with not only the surgery but also with the person behind the laser. They alone are able to help you achieve your vision goals. For this reason, you should never feel pressured by your LASIK surgeon. He or she should be willing to answer all of your questions in order to make an informed decision about the right choice for you.

4. Honesty

This is a big one, and should not be overlooked. Be wary if your surgeon over-promises your potential outcomes after LASIK surgery. LASIK can be life-changing and result in 20/20 (or better!) vision, but the focus should be on better (and not perfect) vision. Your surgeon should be honest and upfront about the limitations of LASIK. You may find that you need glasses or contacts again down the road, as your vision changes with age. You may also find that you need reading glasses after surgery but your vision has improved to the point that you can do away with your regular prescription lenses.

Do your homework when searching for your LASIK surgeon. Search the internet, check out recommendations from friends and family, and resources like the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Ask your prospective surgeon for references and check out reviews from former patients on apps like Yelp. You want to find the best surgeon to achieve your vision correction goals, and that means you need to put in the work. You and your vision deserve the best.
