Aging is inevitable. But HOW you age is up to you. Frantz EyeCare is here to help you age gracefully and see beautifully every step of the way.
Declining near vision is often one of the first things we notice as we age. For many of us, as we approach our 40s and 50s, we start to notice our reading vision deteriorating and we can no longer read or see up close as well as we used to. We need to hold our newspaper/book/menu far away to be able to focus on the words. Or we may have trouble reading the text messages on our phones.
This is a very common condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia affects millions of people all over the world. Fortunately, there is a solution. And Frantz EyeCare can help!
The eye’s natural lens is normally elastic and flexible. It works much like a camera lens to automatically adjust and focus vision. This means you can automatically switch your gaze from something near to something far away.
But over time, the lens in your eye begins to stiffen, unable to bend into the right shape to bring close objects into clear focus. Hello presbyopia! To compensate, you may need to move objects further away to help your eye focus.
Presbyopia is a very natural part of aging and continues to progress over time. For example, someone who is 45 may only notice it when trying to read small print in low light situations. However, someone who is 50 may need to use reading glasses multiple times throughout the day. That is, if you can keep up with them!
What is the KAMRA® Inlay?
The KAMRA Inlay was designed specifically for the treatment of presbyopia. The inlay sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea. Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a tiny ring with an opening – or pinhole – in the center. This pinhole allows only focused light to enter your eye.
The KAMRA inlay is placed in only one of your eyes, allowing you to see up close, while maintaining your distance vision in both eyes. Your non-KAMRA eye is left untouched. Working together, the eyes allow you to see near to far.
The KAMRA inlay is approximately 3.8 millimeters in diameter and weighs less than a grain of salt! In addition, the KAMRA Inlay contains thousands of laser-cut micro perforations that allow your cornea to continue functioning normally after implantation. This advanced technology is making reading glasses a thing of the past.
Who is a Candidate for the KAMRA® Inlay?
The ideal candidate for KAMRA is 40 or older and is someone who is sick of dealing with reading glasses. If you have readers on your nightstand, on your desk, in your car and sometimes on your head – but still can’t find them when you need them – KAMRA is a great option for you.
In short, you can expect to be able to see up close without your reading glasses. You don’t think about how many things you use your near vision for until it’s gone. But after KAMRA Corneal Inlay, you will be able to see your computer screen, your cell phone, a menu – anything you want to see up close – all without taking away any of your distance vision.
The Procedure – What to Expect
When you come in for your KAMRA Inlay procedure, you will receive numbing drops prior to and will be awake during the procedure. You will also be offered medicine to help you relax.
Your Frantz EyeCare surgeon will use a femtosecond laser to create a pocket in the surface of the cornea. Once the corneal “pocket” is created, the KAMRA Inlay will be centered along your visual pathway. Once the KAMRA inlay has been placed, the cornea will heal naturally, requiring no stitches.
Recovery time depends on each individual. Full recovery can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month. Side effects are generally mild and are the same that you would experience with LASIK. Watery eyes, sensitivity to light, and the feeling of dry eyes are common and should soon subside.
If your up-close vision has been declining, or if you are tired of having to reach for your reading glasses, don’t wait! Contact us at Frantz EyeCare to schedule an evaluation today.
