NOW OFFERING CUSTOMVUE,
INDIVIDUALIZED LASER VSION CORRECTION

FORT MYERS/NAPLES - Always at the forefront of technology, area LASIK Specialist Jonathan M. Frantz, M.D., has now taken Laser Vision Correction to a new level following the recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the VISX STAR S4 CustomVue WaveFront System. The approval is based on a multi-center clinical study that confirmed the safety and efficacy of this new laser vision correction procedure.

Last October, Dr. Frantz became the area’s only ophthalmology practice to install the VISX STAR S4 WavePrint System, which incorporates a host of VISX technologies, including the WaveScan Map, the 3D ActiveTrak™, and Variable Spot Scanning (VSS™). “The WaveScan Map, referred to as a ‘fingerprint of your vision,’ obtains a precise and detailed analysis of your entire
optical system,” explained Dr. Frantz. "The data available with this technology not only personalizes treatment, but also enables me to immediately and accurately assess whether a patient is a good candidate for laser vision correction.”

The 3D ActiveTrak is the only system with three-dimensional tracking that follows every involuntary movement of the eye during treatment. VSS allows for a larger treatment area, offering the physician greater flexibility in developing a more personalized laser vision procedure, when pupil size is a consideration. Dr. Frantz has been offering the ActiveTrak and Variable
Spot Scanning at The Center for Laser Vision Correction since 2001.

With the recent FDA approval, Dr. Frantz can now take the digital information acquired from the WaveScan Map and transfer it to the laser, providing a new level of precision and accuracy. “For the first time, WaveScan technology captures unique imperfections in each individual’s vision that could not have been measured before using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses,” said Dr. Frantz.

The CustomVue procedure tailors a distinct correction for each individual - in fact, each treatment is designed by the unique characteristics of the individual’s eyes. “Glasses and contacts are limited in their ability to correct unique imperfections in each individual’s vision,” explained Dr. Frantz. “In fact, thousands of individuals have the same prescription.” With the CustomVue procedure, no two prescriptions are identical. This precise measurement and correction can enable individuals to achieve the
full potential of their vision - a new level of excellence that may not be possible with glasses or contact lenses.

Commenting on the visual quality results of the FDA clinical study, Dr. Frantz said “At one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure, 100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts and 98% could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts.”

An additional advantage is that Dr. Frantz has the option to create a unique trial lens - the VISX PreVue lens - before performing the CustomVue procedure should he feel it would be beneficial to the individual. “ThePreVue lens allows the individual to ‘preview’ his or her potential Personal Best Vision before having the CustomVue procedure,” said Dr. Frantz.

“We’re excited to be the first practice in our area to offer the CustomVue LASIK procedure,” said Dr. Frantz. CustomVue offers a new level of personalization to the LASIK procedure previously unavailable in this area.

Honored as one of the top providers of laser vision correction in the United States by VISX, Inc., Dr. Frantz has been performing Laser Vision Correction since 1987 and was the original principal investigator of the FDA clinical trials that led to the initial approval of the Excimer laser. Dr. Frantz performed almost all of the 500 cases done locally that led to the FDA approval of the original Excimer laser. He performed the first Excimer laser procedure in the State of Florida for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Dr. Frantz has been providing laser vision correction at the main offices of Florida Eye Health on New Brittany Boulevard in Fort Myers since 1996. In 1999, he installed the first on-site laser for Laser Vision Correction in Naples at his office at 2100 N. Tamiami Trail at Gateway Plaza.
