THE LASIK PROCEDURE

Introduction

Laser vision correction can reduce or eliminate your daily struggle with contact lens discomfort, the constant search for misplaced glasses, and the frustrating, inconvenient, and sometimes dangerous inability to see.  A majority of the nearly 145 million Americans who require glasses or contact lenses will find that they are appropriate candidates for laser vision correction.  Our patients recognize that over a period of time, contact lenses and glasses add up to an investment comparable to the cost of laser vision correction.

The Procedure is Quick and Virtually Painless

Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), is a highly effective procedure that is performed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.  The Excimer laser, using ultraviolet light and high energy pulses, removes microscopic layers of corneal tissue to change its shape, allowing light rays to focus more directly on the retina.

The LASIK procedure takes only a few minutes.  After your eye has been completely numbed using anesthetic drops, Dr. Frantz will place a retainer between your eyelids to hold them open during treatment and prevent you from blinking.

Next, he will use an instrument known as a microkeratome to make a protective flap in the cornea. Although there is no discomfort during this process, you may feel a little pressure.

Dr. Frantz will ask you to look directly at the red light while the laser reshapes your cornea, usually in less than a minute. Then, the protective flap is put back in place where it bonds securely without the need for stitches.

Afterwards, drops or ointment will be placed in your eye for protection and comfort.

The VISX Star Laser

We have the VISX Star laser on-site in both our Fort Myers and Naples offices.  We chose the VISX Star laser because it is the most advanced technology to treat all three conditions -- nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  Since receiving FDA approval, VISX systems are now used in three out of every four procedures performed nationally.

Dr. Frantz is one of the top VISX Star refractive surgeons in the country among nearly 4,000 VISX-certified doctors.
